UK Internet Marketing Mentor Nicola Cairncross shares another in this “Business Internet Marketing MOT” series of videos, where she reviews a live website from a marketing strategy and search engine optimisation perspective.

Today, we review the website of yoga teacher Ntathu Allen, who says “I am in process of change – current website was set up a while back..aim I guess to promote my yoga classes and bodywork services. I would like to really use it to attract more local private clients and promote my my friday yoga class. I offer a newsletter, but sign up rate is fairly low. I love writing and write articles which i submit to ezine articles; and once yoga for stress management product is completed hope that will kick-start some sort of internet marketing career and promote yoga business overall. Today welcome to our Business Marketing MOTs and today we’re reviewing the website of Ntathu who is somebody very well-known to me in The Money Gym as well. Ntathu is someone who is very, very into yoga.
So I’ve just arrived at her website which actually very attractive indeed, I love the breathing in and out and all else follows, that’s very cool. Let’s see what Ntathu asked us to review, “I am in process of change – current website ‘yoga inspires’ was set up a while back, I guess to promote my yoga classes and bodywork services. In just looking at what you’re saying Ntathu, I think you should really think about registering a domain name like “yoga class is healing” or “yoga classes Wembley” because local business marketing is getting really hot. If you want some more local private classes, local private classes and your private yoga class in the real world, you could do a lot worst than that. I don’t actually know where you live, but let’s just go and assume that you are in London and see how many searches there are a month. There are 6,400 plus classes in London, searches for classes in London. So that is a really healthy market.
Let’s see if it’s somewhere else – Surrey or Croydon. I’m just trying to get a feel for the kind of searches that are going and whether people are searching a lot locally. Fewer yoga teachers in Croydon or yoga class in Croydon, there is 300 people a month looking for you right now which is rather very cool, and hardly any advertise competition. So you could really clean up on the old AdWords. So looking for private classes for yoga. So, yoga tuition, and let’s just put in yoga London to see what comes up. I am assuming Ntathu is in London, she may well be somewhere, in which case she can follow what I’ve been doing here just to get an idea.
Okay, people are looking for “bikram yoga London,” they’re looking for “yoga classes London,” “South London.” Look, 1,600 people are just looking for yoga in South London, 1,900 looking for yoga in North London. So “ashtanga yoga,” “hot yoga” – look, “yoga teacher,” 1,300 a month are looking for yoga teacher in London. So this is really a very healthy market Ntathu. If you were clued up about your search engine optimisation you wouldn’t even have to go down the AdWords route.
Let’s have a look and see want the competition is like, let’s just see what’s going on with that. Okay 24,800 results for yoga London, which is pathetic. You could be on page one of Google very easily if you did this properly. Let’s just see how much real competition you’ve got with yoga people who are a bit clued up on search engine optimisation. You are competing against 1,700 website across the entire internet. So you really have got an amazing opportunity here to get yourself on to page one of Google. I’m assuming it’s London, I mean it might be Milton Keynes, you might live somewhere in the Milton Keynes.
Let’s see what kind of competition you’ve got there; 144 pages on the entire website devoted to yoga in Milton Keynes. So you really have got an amazing opportunity if you live in Milton Keynes and you’re a yoga teacher. Let’s just see, no one has got “yoga teacher Milton Keynes” in the keyword of their website. If you’re in Milton Keynes and you’re watching this “yoga teacher” then you really dominate your search engine results quite easily. Okay, there are three people including a paid for ad by David Lloyd who’s presumably advertising on that key phrase in every town in the country. So if you’re in Milton Keynes, you really could be on page one of Google tomorrow and good luck to you if you are.
Let’s come back to Ntathu’s site. Now she’s looking, her most wanted action she said is people to sign up to her newsletter. Ntathu I don’t know if ever see this, your site is lovely but the writing is very small on it and I can’t see where you’re telling me to sign up. Now you know better than this Ntathu, you’ve been around us and have come to loads of our internet marketing classes, so you should have pop-up here. If your most wanted action is – you should have nice, slowly fading-in, beautiful looking pop-up that tells me to sign up for your newsletter because I can’t even see it listed here, no wonder you don’t get anyone signing up for it. Unless it’s this, your “free weekly yoga guide to better health,” let’s assume that’s your newsletter call-to-action. It’s a bit hidden isn’t it?
Yoga at home, this is where you need to be focusing. You need to be focusing on helping everyone else who’s got a yoga practise and not knowing what they’re doing on how to improve their yoga practise. So it is a newsletter, but you don’t say so over here and you haven’t got a big call-to-action on your front page. So that’s what you need to focus on straightaway.
Let’s see what you’re doing with your keywords, view your page source. We have got some sort of meta tags going on, but as you can see they haven’t been filled in. So there’s nothing on it, the meta description, there’s nothing in the meta content. At least you should have “yoga classes,” “yoga teacher,” “private yoga,” the name of your town. Central London and South East London, there you go. So you are in London. I hope it has really been informative for you because you really have a golden opportunity to get to page one of Google for all of your key phrases, there’s hardly any competition at all.
But the first thing you need to sort out are these meta tags. You need to get your three key phrases in the first line of your description, you need to get your three key phrases in, your keywords, and you need to get your three key phrases ideally into the title of your website. At the moment it says “get your free weekly yoga guide to better health, inner peace and relaxation.” I suppose better health, inner peace and relaxation could be your three key phrases. If they are, then you’re missing a trick really by not having what people are actually looking for. I don’t think they’re going to come in Google and type in “better health.” I think they’re going to come in to Google and type in “yoga classes, Central London” or “yoga classes, Southeast London” or whatever.
So you need to decide what you want to sell them first, what’s your lead product Ntathu. Is it yoga class, is there an e-book of some kind, yoga at home lessons? What is it you want to target to sell your customers first after they’ve signed up to your newsletter? That will give so much focus and it will make the marketing of your website so much easier.
