Should You Be Paying Attention To Pinterest In Your Business?

Over at Marketing Profs they are talking about whether you should be paying attention to Pinterest if you are in business.  My immediate reaction last week, when Pinterest started popping up on my radar was twofold:

  • Who needs (or can keep up with) another social media platform!
  • What is the point of posting pictures in business eh?  No keywords there…

But Amanda DiSilvestro of Business.com says:  “As with most social media sites, Pinterest started out as a place for individuals to connect with friends and then developed into a place for businesses. Pinterest is currently on the brink of individual-to-business use, so now is a great time for your company to get started. This new site has been growing exponentially since its launch in March 2010 with nearly $7.2 million unique visitors according to Site Analytics.

For those who are unfamiliar with Pinterest, it is the social networking of visuals. It allows people to “pin” pictures that they like onto their virtual boards. Most people use these photos and boards as a way to plan an event, such as a birthday party or wedding, because it allows them to see the color scheme and overall theme of the event all in one place. However, people have slowly begun creating boards simply for fun. They may have a board titled “things I like” or “things that I think are funny” as opposed to a collage of details for a specific occasion. Below is an example of a board that someone created of a compilation of their favorite foods:

People not only have the ability to pin things they see onto their Pinterest boards, but they can comment on photos, like photos, and follow certain subjects or certain people. In other words, the site has a definitely social media feel.

Tips and Tricks to Using Pinterest to Help Build a Brand

What most companies don’t realize is that you do not have to be a design company to use Pinterest to your advantage. The site isn’t strictly photographs. Infographics as well as videos are welcome on Pinterest and can be added to someone’s board.

Twitter Weekly Updates for 2012-02-19

Business Diary | What Were YOU Doing Two Years Ago This Weekend?

Two years ago this Saturday I boarded a plane at snowy Gatwick bound for Greece, not entirely sure if I’d be coming back to the UK, to live permanently at least.

I had just sold the entire contents of my big house on Shoreham Beach, sent my teens to live with their dad for a while, moved a few boxes of my most treasured possessions into my ex-husbands garage (well, you can’t sell the Christmas decorations!) and just two suitcases into my sister’s little cottage in Shoreham town.  Even my beloved old red Mercedes had died that week and been sent  to the garage for disposal.

I know that because it’s my friend Steve’s birthday on Saturday, and when I boarded that plane, it was his birthday.

Since then, the last two years have been a rollercoaster and this picture, which has been circulating on Facebook recently, just about sums up what it’s been like.

I’ve been round about the houses over the last two years with thinking about what I wanted to do next, as any follower of this blog will know, till I eventually came to a knowledge of my new vision and mission.

But even while I still wasn’t really see it clearly, I carried on taking action because I know that even before the Law Of Attraction comes The Law Of Taking Action !  So I just kept “doin’ stuff” trusting that I’d get there in the end.  This stuff included recording my progress on the blog, journaling and talking regularly to my mentors.

Ironically considering the dates, just this last week a very successful multi-millionaire entrepreneur of my acquaintance rang me up and said “Nic, you know that deal I was putting together with X?  It’s come off but I’ve realised I need help with it.  Do you fancy going into business with me on it?” and lo and behold…..

It’s my new vision, made real, but improved a LOT by my going into business with someone I like and respect a lot, who I’ll learn immense amounts from.

This in the very same month that one of my ex-clients (and now friend) rang me up and offered me the use of her Mercedes sports convertible to get around in, while she’s in the USA.

Now that is very cool!

So What Action HAVE I Been Taking?

I’ve not had a very productive couple of weeks, by my standards although I have been going to the Gym, and enjoying it, which is a miracle!

The second streaming head cold in one month knocked me back a bit and my blogging mojo seems to have dried up a bit with no new inspiration striking.  I have been stalking my favourite bloggers and sharing the best of what I’ve found, tweeting and even power-tweeting to my Twylah page which feels like marketing activity but surely isn’t as effective for the search engines as a good meaty original blog post would be?

I’ve written before about what to do when blogging inspiration dries up but I made an appointment to go and see one of my mentors last Friday.  The morning catching up on the Internet Marketers Cruise among other things, was lovely, but it did send me down a bit of a false path for a few days, making me feel like I need to create and launch a new product, when I actually just want to stick to my goal of attracting 103 mentoring members as soon as possible.

Hey, I’ve just realised that due to adjusting my membership fees on my mentors advice, as he strongly felt I was under-valuing the 3 x live weekly webinar support element of my offer, I only need 50 members now!  Bring it on!

As part of my ongoing effort to bring maximum value I have had a tidy up in my members area (sounds a bit vaguely rude, that!) after some feedback from my clients that they didn’t really know the true depth of what’s in there and I created a video welcome that I now have to re-do as I’ve made some changes.

Making video and audio is sometimes a tiny bit tedious due to the many processes involved but the good news is that it only has to be done once, if you remember to keep it evergreen.

A good example is my “3 Secrets Of Business Success” series of 6 videos that I made last year.  They sit on my site, and in the follow up emails to my free offers, and I deliberately made them evergreen, so that I can add whichever offer I am making at the time, to pop up automatically under the video.

I ‘ve currently got a stonking offer under Video 6, that is not available anywhere else, but you have to get through them all to see it.  It’s a reward, see?!  The thing is, that I know that anyone who watches and enjoys all six videos will be a perfect client for my mentoring programme.  Not only will they know how I work but they will have been fully primed on the kind of thing we can cover together.

Peer To Peer Mentoring

As well as my US mentor, a group of UK friends who informally mentor me, I’ve just joined the Worthing & Adur Chamber “Peer To Peer” Mentoring group.  We start next Thursday for a year.

For me, it’s not so much about getting their advice as to how to run my business, as getting direct feedback from my target market about either Cairncross Media, or even possibly this new venture.

I really enjoyed the taster day and apparently the take up has been very strong.some spaces leftif you are in the area and you want to check it out?

I’ll let you know how I get on.

Building A Brand For Your Entrepreneurial Venture

I don’t have very much time for logos and stuff, as you may recall from my previous experience of someone telling me how awful my branding was and offering to rebrand this website while all my clients pretty much 100% hated the proposed changes.   Click that text link above and scroll down to “Does My Website Look Good In This?” if you want a look.

There are also some very bad memories of a day spent wrangling with my fellow “Wealth Creation Conference” founders about the logo for that, back in 2006 or 2007, where we AND the graphic designer nearly came to blows!

I usually come up with a basic concept myself and then get someone on Fiverr.com to have a go at it but sometimes I just knock something together and then when Steve Watson sees it, he redoes it for me, like he has with this one for Cairncross Media (which is still very much a work in progress).

Here’s my first experience with using Fiverr.com for a logo – this was for Spartan Marketing Masterclass and I think they did a nice job.

I knew I want Cairncross Media to be very light, bright, white and modern but with the accent colours to be raspberry and verdigris. Where did I get the colours?  The raspberry is from my favourite shower gel and the green is from someone’s garage door locally.

I also know that, if I’m to attract more corporate clients for internet marketing services, that site has to be a bit more more corporate looking rather than all busy and friendly like this one.  That’s one of the reasons I spun it off in the first place even though I’m always telling my mentoring clients to keep the number of their websites to an absolute minimum!

Above you can see his first interim design, while to the right there is my first effort.

I did have a client recently who specialised in holistic logo design so I always thought perhaps when I needed something like that doing, I would wheel her in but I can’t bear the thought of all the esoteric conversation that would involve.

Over at one of my favourite blogs Income Diary, Josh Dunlop is writing really well about how to build a strong brand for your new entrepreneurial venture.  He says…

…..A brand is consistent message of who you are. It’s your business’ identity, and should be the same over all of the branding you do, whether it’s Facebook, Twitter, Google+, you website, or even your business card. This identity is not just about a logo though, it’s about something that people can relate to, associate with; something which will resonate to customers, to keep them coming back time after time.

The American Marketing Association defines a brand as a “Name, term, design, symbol, or any other feature that identifies one seller’s good or service as distinct from those of other sellers.”

A good brand will:

  • Deliver your companies message in a clear and concise manner
  • Connect you with the customer and motivate them to revisit you
  • Increase your credibility.

How Important is a Brand?

If you want to grow, you need to be something that someone can get behind, and for that, you need to have a company image; a brand. Every company has a brand in one way or another, some are just more successful than others, and when it comes to successful brands, I can’t think of much better than presidential campaigns. In a very short space of time, they build an brand for themselves, covering everything I detail in the following section….

We’ve talked about business brands before on The Business Success Factory, featuring an interview with Mark Donnan who used to work with brands like Haagen-Daz, Mars Bar, Viagra and other fun products.  You can read that transcript by clicking the link there and it’s well worth your time, as is the blog post by Josh.

Entrepreneurs | How To Successfully Dodge Failure

One of my favourite entrepreneurs blogs in the whole wide world is Entrepreneurs-Journey.com and today there is a brilliant post by Nathaneal Mohr with two short videos on the topic of how you can successfully dodge failure as an entrepreneur.

He’s very serious in the first video but in the second he’s much more relaxed looking, bless him! However, that pen is a bit distracting!  No matter, the message in the videos is very sound so if you have just got a cup of tea, treat yourself to this diversion then head over via the link above or below to enjoy the rest of the post.

Nataneal Mohr says “Do you want to make your business fail proof regardless of how big your goals are or how big your challenges may be? Do you you want to make sure nothing stands between you and the goals you want to achieve as an entrepreneur?

I’m a business coach who for the last 10 years, has researched the science of successfully growing a small but truly profitable business.

I have been studying the patterns of how a solo-preneur, or entrepreneur can predictably reach the highest goals in the shortest period of time without feeling defeated no matter what external circumstances try to hold back your business.

In these two short videos you’re about to watch, I am going to present to you the MAP for making yourself fail proof as an entrepreneur…..”
